Ribiers, a charming village in the Buëch valley, is about an hour and a quarter’s drive from Aix-en-Provence TGV station and 80 minutes from Marseille Airport, and makes the perfect base from which to explore the awe-inspiring countryside – on foot, bicycle, horseback or by car.

The Château is just a few steps away from the pretty main square, a popular local meeting place. Ribiers has a weekly market, two bars, a restaurant, a leisure centre with swimming pool and sports stadium, as well as a selection of small shops, post office and multi-media library.

Ten minutes down the road is the lively town of Sisteron, which has a twice-weekly market, plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, and a lovely bathing lake surrounded by peaceful relaxation areas. Crowned by La Citadelle, the most impressive fortification in Provence, Sisteron is set on the banks of the river Durance, under the enormous rock mass of the Rocher de la Baume.

With a rich medieval heritage including the famous narrow streets called andrônes, Sisteron also holds a summer festival, Les Nuits de la Citadelle, that brings music, dance and theatre to the dramatic setting of the fortress.

If you prefer a more energetic holiday, you won’t be disappointed either. Just minutes away from Ribiers are the Gorges de la Méouge where you can swim in natural pools and dive under cascades, or you can choose from five different rides in canoe or kayak down Provence’s mighty river Durance. The nearby Montagne de Chabre is an internationally renowned centre for paragliders, while Ribiers also hosts an international equestrian endurance event each year. The ski resorts of La Joue du Loup and Devoluy are less than an hour’s drive away, and the resorts of the Riviera can be reached by car in just 90 minutes.
